Of Painted Hills
The Painted Hills is a colorful geologic area that is part of John Day Country in north central Oregon.
The rock formations feature multiple layers of fantastic colors on rounded hills that appear to be under 1000 feet high. The vibrant colors of the land are due to the reaction of different minerals from volcanic ash that remained after each eruption. Over time the layer’s dominant mineral caused distinct coloration.
This is a very peaceful place. It’s less crowded if you arrive early during a weekday in spring or autumn.
