A New World: Creating An Artist's Book
In April 2026, I designed, printed, and produced my first artist’s book, Vashon Island Light. Though I was somewhat familiar with Artists' Books, I had not envisioned myself producing one until very recently. While visiting the Missoula, Montana art museum I became entranced by a small and very unique book that told a story with several pictures. This inspired me to envision the possibilities of using my own photographic prints to tell stories in a very personal way. Thus, Vashon Island Light was born.
Perhaps some of you are wondering: just what is an Artist's Book? According to the Printed Matter organization, an Artist's Book is a medium of artistic expression that uses the form, structure, or concept of a book as a work of art. This is far different than a typical mass-produced coffee table book.
Vashon Island Light is the first of what I hope will be multiple Artist’s Books under the Digital To Go imprint. Over the decades I’ve amassed numerous visual stories that can be unified in an Artist's Book format and integrated with complementary text. Having a unified concept woven among fine photographs offers a very different reading and viewing experience than more typical “greatest hits” collections that comprise most photo books and art exhibitions. The plan is to release each title as a limited edition. Stay tuned for more information.
